Exam Preparation

There are no special preparations or instructions for the exam.

What Should I Wear

Comfortable, loose clothing should be worn, although in some cases a patient will be asked to change into a patient gown for the examination.

What to expect

A type of echo called Doppler ultrasound shows how well blood flows through your heart’s chambers and valves.

Echo can detect possible blood clots inside the heart, fluid buildup in the pericardium (the sac around the heart), and problems with the aorta. The aorta is the main artery that carries oxygen-rich blood from your heart to your body.

Cardiac Doppler is an ultrasound test. It may be used to find leaky cardiac valves and/or the presence of tightened or stenotic valves. The test takes about 10 to 20 minutes. A transducer coated with conductive jelly will be placed on the chest and moved along the chest wall over the areas to be examined.
